Summary

Social influence within groups increases intergroup competition when group members support shared self-interest. This effect weakens when outcomes differ greatly between groups, suggesting competition is then driven by group norms.

Area of Science:

  • Social Psychology
  • Group Dynamics
  • Intergroup Relations

Background:

  • Intragroup social influence significantly shapes intergroup dynamics.
  • Understanding factors that promote or inhibit intergroup competition is crucial for social psychology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how intragroup social influence affects intergroup competition.
  • To examine the moderating role of outcome correspondence and group interest norms.

Main Methods:

  • Three experiments were conducted using a mutual fate control situation and a Prisoner's Dilemma Game.
  • Manipulated social support for shared self-interest and outcome correspondence between groups.

Main Results:

  • Social support for shared self-interest enhanced intergroup competition.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This effect was stronger with low outcome noncorrespondence.
  • The effect was attenuated with high outcome noncorrespondence, potentially due to group interest norms.
  • Conclusions:

    • Intragroup social influence, particularly support for shared interests, can escalate intergroup competition.
    • Outcome correspondence and group norms moderate this influence, impacting the interindividual-intergroup discontinuity.
