Summary

Individualized counseling for weight loss yielded greater results than skill-building. This approach was also more cost-effective per pound lost, though longer-term sustainability requires further study.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral science
  • Obesity research
  • Dietary interventions

Background:

  • Sustainable weight loss interventions require further investigation.
  • Overweight and obese women were studied to compare two behavioral interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of conventional individual counseling versus a group-based skill-building intervention for weight loss.
  • To evaluate weight loss, resource utilization, and cost per unit weight loss for each intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Eighty overweight/obese women were randomized into two groups: counseling-based intervention or skill-building intervention.
  • Outcomes measured included weight loss at 6 months, dietitian hours, and cost per pound lost.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The counseling-based group lost 8.8 lb (P=0.0001) versus 3.8 lb (P=0.01) in the skill-building group at 6 months.
  • Individualized counseling was more cost-effective, averaging $21 per pound lost compared to $48 per pound lost for skill-building.
  • Fewer dietitian hours were needed for the skill-building group (131 hours) compared to the counseling group (160 hours).

Conclusions:

  • Individualized, office-based counseling resulted in significantly greater weight loss than a skill-building approach at 6 months.
  • The counseling intervention was more cost-effective per pound of weight lost.
  • Further research is needed to assess the long-term sustainability of weight loss with the skill-building intervention.
