Summary

Inflammatory markers, C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood count (WBC), are elevated in symptomatic and ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). Asymptomatic AAA patients showed no significant increase in these acute phase reactants.

Background:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are increasingly associated with inflammatory processes.
  • The degree of inflammation varies across different stages of AAA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare acute phase reactants in patients with asymptomatic, symptomatic (non-ruptured), and ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms.
  • To investigate the role of C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood count (WBC) as indicators of AAA severity.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study included 225 patients with AAA.
  • Admission CRP and WBC levels were analyzed using polynomial logistic regression.
  • Adjustments were made for age, sex, hemoglobin, and aneurysm diameter.

  • These inflammatory markers are not significantly elevated in asymptomatic AAA patients.
  • CRP and WBC can serve as potential biomarkers for AAA progression and complications.
