Area of Science:

  • Embryology
  • Human Anatomy
  • Medical Genetics

Background:

  • Breast development anomalies encompass polymastia, polythelia, and polythelia areolaris.
  • Polythelia, the presence of accessory nipples, is the most frequent anomaly.
  • These anomalies typically arise along the embryonic milk line.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the clinical significance of breast development anomalies, particularly polythelia.
  • To highlight the potential association between these anomalies and other medical conditions.
  • To discuss indications for surgical intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of studies on breast development anomalies.
  • Analysis of reported cases and clinical observations.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Synthesis of evidence regarding associated conditions and management.
  • Main Results:

    • Polythelia is the most common anomaly, often asymptomatic.
    • These anomalies can serve as markers for urologic malformations.
    • A potential link to malignancies has been suggested in some literature.

    Conclusions:

    • Breast development anomalies, especially polythelia, require careful evaluation.
    • Consideration of associated urologic or other systemic conditions is crucial.
    • Excision may be necessary for diagnostic, therapeutic, or cosmetic purposes.
