Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) among wine growers.
  • To investigate occupational risk factors associated with RP in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A survey conducted in 1997-1998 in the Champagne region.
  • Comparison of 405 wine growers with 374 controls (farmers, industrial workers, employees).
  • RP identified via symptom checklist; risk factors analyzed.

Main Results:

  • RP prevalence was significantly higher in wine growers (9.8%) versus controls (2.9%).
  • Increased smoking and prolonged cold exposure were noted in wine growers with RP.
  • No significant difference in RP prevalence related to gender or vibration exposure.

Conclusions:

  • Wine growers in the Champagne region exhibit a high prevalence of Raynaud's phenomenon.
  • Cold exposure is a potential contributing factor to RP in this occupational group.
