Provider leadership style and view of patient compliance

The term "compliance" came into the nursing language from the language of medicine. Definitions of compliance range from patients' obeying providers' orders to patients determining desired health outcomes and treatment goals. A historical perspective of this term provides a framework for discussion of approaches to compliance identified from the research literature. This review draws an analogy between these approaches and leadership styles and raises the question about what role provider style plays in patient compliance.
