Current treatment options in oncology·2002

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL) encompass diverse conditions requiring precise diagnosis.
  • Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most prevalent form of CTCL, impacting over 50% of patients.
  • Current perception suggests MF is not curable with existing standard therapies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To outline the diagnostic requirements for effective CTCL treatment.
  • To define treatment goals for mycosis fungoides (MF).
  • To review current and emerging therapeutic modalities for CTCL.

Main Methods:

  • Diagnosis relies on integrating clinical presentation with histopathology, immunophenotyping, and gene rearrangement studies.
  • Evaluation by specialists experienced in diverse CTCL presentations is vital for treatment planning.
  • Treatment strategies are categorized into topical (skin-directed) and systemic approaches.

Main Results:

  • Accurate diagnosis is fundamental for selecting appropriate treatment options for CTCL.
  • Symptom relief and cosmetic enhancement are primary objectives in MF management.
  • Interferon-alpha remains a key systemic agent for MF, with new CTCL treatments recently approved.

Conclusions:

  • Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation is essential for managing cutaneous T-cell lymphomas.
  • While MF may not be curable, effective symptom management and cosmetic improvement are achievable goals.
  • A combination of established and novel therapies offers evolving treatment avenues for CTCL.
