Summary

Simple bone cysts (SBC) may resolve on their own. This study followed ten patients with SBC, finding that most lesions remodeled or resolved over time, suggesting spontaneous healing is possible.

Background:

  • Simple bone cysts (SBC) are intraosseous jaw lesions of unknown etiology.
  • The natural history and potential for spontaneous resolution of SBC remain incompletely understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the possibility of spontaneous resolution in simple bone cysts.
  • To evaluate the clinical and radiographic changes in SBC over a follow-up period.

Main Methods:

  • Ten patients diagnosed with SBC based on clinical and radiographic findings were included.
  • Follow-up duration ranged from 1 to 7 years (mean 3.8 years).
  • Lesion resolution was assessed through subjective radiologist evaluation and objective grey level histogram analysis.

  • All patients remained asymptomatic throughout the follow-up.
  • Of the ten SBCs, one resolved, six remodeled, two increased in size, and one remained static.
  • Objective analysis showed a decrease in mean grey level differences between the lesion and normal contralateral mandible in 8 out of 10 cases.

Conclusions:

  • Spontaneous resolution of simple bone cysts is probable.
  • A standardized protocol for clinical and radiographic diagnosis and follow-up of SBC is proposed.
