We present new nonlinear expressions for temperature fluctuations from the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. Our findings include nonlinear corrections and dominate cosmic microwave background anisotropy on small angular scales.

Area of Science:

  • Cosmology
  • Astrophysics
  • Plasma Physics

Background:

  • The kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect describes the scattering of cosmic microwave background photons by hot, moving electrons.
  • Previous models often neglected nonlinear corrections to electron velocities and densities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To derive fully nonlinear expressions for temperature fluctuations in the kinetic SZ effect.
  • To incorporate previously neglected nonlinear corrections for greater accuracy.

Main Methods:

  • Derivation of fully nonlinear expressions for kinetic SZ temperature fluctuations.
  • Application of the halo model for nonlinear gravitational clustering.
  • Computation of the nonlinear kinetic SZ power spectrum.

Main Results:

  • The derived expressions reproduce the Ostriker-Vishniac effect to second order.
  • New nonlinear corrections to electron velocities and densities are identified.
  • The nonlinear kinetic SZ power spectrum is computed, dominating primary anisotropy on small angular scales.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides a more comprehensive understanding of the kinetic SZ effect by including nonlinearities.
  • These nonlinear corrections are crucial for interpreting small-scale cosmic microwave background anisotropies.
  • The findings have implications for cosmological parameter estimation using SZ observations.
