Summary

Articulation is often impaired in individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). While phonological issues decrease with age, phonetic difficulties increase, with overall errors linked to IQ.

Area of Science:

  • Linguistics
  • Genetics
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex genetic disorder affecting multiple body systems.
  • Individuals with PWS often exhibit speech and language impairments, impacting communication.
  • Understanding articulation in PWS is crucial for targeted speech therapy interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and characterize the articulation patterns in individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome.
  • To explore the relationship between articulation errors, chronological age, and IQ in PWS.
  • To differentiate between phonological and phonetic difficulties in the PWS speech sample.

Main Methods:

  • A picture-naming test was administered to elicit speech samples from 13 individuals with PWS.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Speech samples were phonetically transcribed using a stringent procedure with reliability checks.
  • Phonetic and phonological analyses were conducted to assess articulation from various perspectives.
  • Main Results:

    • Articulation was found to be impaired in the majority of individuals with PWS studied.
    • A significant correlation was observed between the overall error rate and the individuals' IQ.
    • Phonological problems tended to resolve with increasing age, whereas phonetic difficulties became more pronounced.

    Conclusions:

    • Articulation deficits are a common characteristic of Prader-Willi syndrome.
    • Intellectual quotient is a key factor influencing the severity of articulation errors in PWS.
    • The progression of speech difficulties in PWS involves a shift from phonological to phonetic challenges over time.
