Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Orthopedics
  • Medical Devices

Background:

  • Axillary crutches are commonly used mobility aids.
  • Improper or prolonged use can lead to complications.
  • Arterial injury from medical devices is a recognized concern.

Observation:

  • A 65-year-old woman presented with subacute ischemia in her right upper limb.
  • She had a significant leg length discrepancy (30 cm) due to childhood poliomyelitis.
  • Clinical examination and surgical findings revealed an axillary artery aneurysm with thrombosis.

Findings:

  • The axillary aneurysm and thrombosis were directly attributed to the chronic use of axillary crutches.
  • Surgical intervention involved resection-graft of the aneurysm and thrombectomy.
  • Restoration of arterial patency was achieved post-surgery.

Implications:

  • Axillary crutches can cause arterial stenosis or aneurysms in the axillary artery.
  • Complications include thrombosis, distal embolization, and mass formation.
  • Early diagnosis and surgical treatment are essential to avoid irreversible sequelae.
