Background:

  • Lichen nitidus is a rare inflammatory skin condition presenting as small papules.

Observation:

  • A Japanese girl experienced severe contact dermatitis followed by generalized lichen nitidus.
  • She had documented exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis at ages 6 and 10.
  • Her skin eruption did not respond to topical corticosteroids or tranilast.

Findings:

  • The patient's lichen nitidus papules significantly improved and almost completely disappeared after a 6-month course of oral isoniazid.
  • This response suggests a potential role for Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the pathogenesis of her lichen nitidus.
