Summary

This study identifies a new type of non-pigmented dysplastic melanocytic nevi (DMN). These white DMN may indicate a higher risk for malignant melanoma development.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Dysplastic melanocytic nevi (DMN) are atypical moles that can be precursors to melanoma.
  • Complete lack of pigmentation is an unusual characteristic for DMN.

Observation:

  • Three cases of a novel white DMN variant were observed.
  • Clinically, these lesions presented as non-pigmented macules with accentuated skin markings and a silvery sheen.
  • Histological examination revealed typical DMN features with atypical melanocytes.

Findings:

  • The described white DMN variant exhibits characteristic histological features of DMN.
  • Despite lacking pigment, these lesions share key histological markers with conventional DMN.
  • All three patients with white DMN were also diagnosed with malignant melanoma.

Implications:

  • White DMN may serve as a crucial morphological marker for identifying patients at risk of melanoma.
  • Recognition of this variant is important for early detection and management of malignant melanoma.
  • Further research into the precursor role of white DMN in melanoma development is warranted.
