    Summary

    Background:

    • Retinal detachment with macular involvement presents a significant challenge in visual restoration.
    • Scleral buckling is a common surgical technique for retinal detachment repair.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term visual outcomes of scleral buckling using fascia lata in patients with retinal detachment and macular involvement.
    • To identify prognostic factors influencing visual acuity after surgery.

    Main Methods:

    • A retrospective study of 100 patients undergoing scleral buckling with encircling fascia lata for retinal detachment and macular involvement.
    • Inclusion of patients with aphakia and pre-existing ocular pathology.
    • Follow-up data analyzed for 77 patients with an average of 26.1 months.

    Main Results:

    • 56.5% of patients achieved visual acuities of 20/60 or better.
    • Duration of detachment (critical period of one month) and preoperative ocular pathology were significant prognostic factors.
    • No significant difference in visual acuity between phakic and aphakic patients.
    • 50% of patients experienced increased myopia (-1.01 diopters on average).

    Conclusions:

    • Timely surgical intervention and the absence of comorbidities are crucial for optimal visual outcomes.
    • Myopic shift is a potential postsurgical complication requiring monitoring.
