Summary

People with dual diagnoses attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) at similar rates to those with only substance use disorders. However, schizophrenia patients attend AA/NA meetings less frequently.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Addiction Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Many individuals with substance use disorders are referred to mutual help organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
  • Limited research exists on the adherence to these self-help group referrals, especially among individuals with co-occurring substance use and severe mental illness (dual diagnosis).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the attendance rates of AA and NA among individuals with dual diagnoses.
  • To explore how specific diagnoses within the dual diagnosis group relate to meeting attendance.

Main Methods:

  • The study followed 351 individuals with dual diagnoses treated in a hospital setting.
  • Attendance at AA or NA meetings was tracked for ten months post-hospitalization.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The relationship between specific psychiatric diagnoses and meeting attendance was analyzed.
  • Main Results:

    • Overall, participants with dual diagnoses showed AA/NA attendance rates comparable to individuals with substance use disorders but without severe mental illness.
    • Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder reported significantly fewer days attending AA or NA meetings compared to other dual diagnosis groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Individuals with dual diagnoses generally engage with AA/NA similarly to those with substance use disorders alone.
    • Specific severe mental illnesses, particularly schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders, present a barrier to consistent participation in AA/NA self-help groups.
