Insights
Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection in children can lead to adult health issues. Effective treatment requires multi-drug regimens due to increasing bacterial resistance, necessitating updated eradication strategies.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Pediatric Gastroenterology
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Helicobacter pylori (Hp) is a gram-negative bacterium colonizing the gastric mucosa.
- Hp infection in childhood is linked to various diseases with long-term adult health implications.
- High Hp resistance necessitates multi-drug treatment regimens.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review recommended therapies for Hp eradication.
- To analyze global re-infection and resistance rates.
- To examine current Hp eradication and follow-up policies.
Main Methods:
- Literature review of recommended Hp treatment protocols.
- Analysis of worldwide data on Hp re-infection and resistance.
- Review of existing public health policies for Hp management.
- Inclusion of personal clinical experience in Hp prevalence and endoscopy findings.
Main Results:
- Multi-drug therapy is essential for effective Hp treatment.
- Significant global variations in Hp re-infection and resistance rates exist.
- Current policies for Hp eradication and follow-up require critical evaluation.
Conclusions:
- Optimized therapeutic strategies and policy updates are crucial for controlling Hp infection.
- Understanding local resistance patterns is vital for tailoring treatment.
- Continued research and surveillance are needed to combat Hp prevalence and resistance.
Abstract:
Helicobacter pylori (Hp) the gram-negative bacteria succeeding in surviving in such an unreceptive medium as the gastric mucosa, has been associated with an important group of diseases in childhood with subsequent consequences in adulthood. Evidence has shown that Hp optimum treatment requires multi-drug regime due to its high ability to become resistant. This article presents the most recommended courses of therapy to treat Hp, as well as re-infection and resistance rates worldwide, analyzing the existing policies for Hp eradication and follow-up. Finally, we include our personal experience in prevalence and management of Hp found in endoscopies.
