Summary

Phospho-soda (Na-P) solution offers superior bowel cleansing for CT colonography compared to polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution. Na-P demonstrated better tolerance and fewer side effects, improving patient experience.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Radiology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Effective bowel preparation is crucial for accurate CT colonography.
  • Traditional bowel cleansing agents have varying efficacy and tolerability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the cleansing efficacy, ease of preparation, and side-effect profiles of polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution versus phospho-soda (Na-P) solution.
  • To evaluate patient tolerance and procedural outcomes for two distinct bowel preparation regimens.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, randomized, radiologist-blinded study involving 50 participants.
  • Participants were randomized to receive either PEG or Na-P bowel preparation before CT colonography.
  • Cleansing quality was semiquantitatively scored by blinded radiologists; ease of preparation and side effects were assessed via questionnaire.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Na-P preparation resulted in significantly better overall bowel cleansing quality compared to PEG.
  • Superior cleansing scores were observed with Na-P in the rectum, sigmoid, descending, and transverse colon.
  • Na-P was significantly better tolerated, with reduced incidence of nausea and fecal incontinence.

Conclusions:

  • Na-P solution provides superior bowel preparation quality for CT colonography compared to PEG solution.
  • Na-P is better tolerated by patients and associated with fewer adverse effects.
  • These findings suggest Na-P as a preferred regimen for CT colonography preparation.
