Summary

Men with a history of prostatitis have an increased risk of developing prostate cancer, according to this meta-analysis. Further research is needed to confirm if infections are a cause of prostate cancer.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Oncology
  • Urology

Background:

  • Prostatitis is a common condition affecting men.
  • The link between prostatitis and prostate cancer requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the association between prostatitis and prostate cancer.
  • To pool data from previous epidemiological studies.

Main Methods:

  • Comprehensive literature search up to 2000.
  • Blinded review and data abstraction of selected studies.
  • Meta-analysis of pooled data.

Main Results:

  • A history of prostatitis was associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer (OR = 1.6).
  • Population-based case-control studies showed a higher odds ratio (OR = 1.8).

Related Experiment Videos

  • History of syphilis and gonorrhea also showed increased relative risk estimates.
  • Conclusions:

    • Infections, including prostatitis, may be a mechanism in prostate cancer development.
    • Causality remains uncertain due to potential recall and detection bias.
    • Future cohort studies should investigate infections as potential prostate cancer risk factors.
