Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics
  • Psychiatry
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Psychosis during pregnancy presents significant risks to both mother and fetus.
  • A history of poor obstetric outcomes necessitates careful management during subsequent pregnancies.

Observation:

  • A pregnant woman with a history of adverse obstetric events developed psychosis at 23 weeks gestation.
  • Treatment with olanzapine was initiated at 24 weeks gestation and continued until 10 days before delivery.

Findings:

  • No adverse events were observed during the pregnancy or delivery period.
  • The infant demonstrated healthy development with Apgar scores of 8/10 at one minute and 9/10 at five minutes.

Implications:

  • Olanzapine appears to be a safe and effective treatment option for psychosis in pregnant patients.
  • This case supports the use of atypical antipsychotics in managing psychiatric conditions during gestation.
  • Further research is warranted to confirm the safety and efficacy of olanzapine across a larger obstetric population.
