Summary

Diabetes and hyperglycemia cause peritoneal membrane changes in rats, including increased permeability. Insulin treatment prevented these alterations, suggesting good diabetes control preserves peritoneal membrane integrity for dialysis patients.

Background:

  • Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a renal replacement therapy for diabetic patients.
  • The impact of diabetes on the peritoneal membrane (PM) is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To elucidate the functional, biochemical, and molecular changes in the peritoneal membrane (PM) induced by diabetes and hyperglycemia.
  • To assess the role of insulin and hyperosmolality in these PM alterations.

Main Methods:

  • Induction of diabetes in rats using streptozotocin (STZ).
  • Peritoneal equilibration tests, morphological analyses, and measurement of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activities and advanced glycation end products (AGEs).
