    Summary

    Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) expression was evaluated in various thyroid lesions. TPO was present in most nonneoplastic and benign thyroid lesions, but also in some malignant ones, indicating it cannot differentiate between them.

    Background:

    • Histoenzymologic studies of the human thyroid are limited, primarily focusing on differentiating benign from malignant tumors.
    • A systematic investigation into the distribution and behavior of enzymes across diverse thyroid lesions is lacking.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate thyroid peroxidase (TPO) expression in diseased thyroid glands.
    • To assess the utility of TPO as a biomarker for defining the biological behavior of thyroid lesions.

    Main Methods:

    • Evaluation of TPO expression in 117 neoplastic and nonneoplastic thyroid lesions.
    • Analysis of at least 200 cells per specimen to determine TPO positivity.
    • A threshold of 80% positive cells was used to define TPO positivity.
