Summary

Nerve conduction blocks, a sign of n-hexane neuropathy, were infrequent in a small group of exposed workers. The occurrence of these blocks may depend on the intensity and duration of exposure to n-hexane.

Background:

  • Nerve conduction blocks, characterized by reduced compound muscle action potential amplitude proximally versus distally, are known indicators of neuropathy.
  • These blocks have been previously observed in cases of solvent abuse (glue-sniffing) and industrial exposure to n-hexane.

Observation:

  • This study examined the frequency of focal conduction anomalies in a homogeneous group of 10 young workers diagnosed with n-hexane polyneuropathy.
  • Nerve conduction studies were performed to assess the electrophysiological effects of n-hexane exposure.

Findings:

  • Partial conduction blocks were identified in only two of the ten workers studied.
  • The presence of these blocks was potentially linked to the intensity and duration of exposure to n-hexane.

Implications:

  • Focal nerve conduction blocks may not be a universal finding in early n-hexane polyneuropathy, even in homogeneous groups.
  • Further research is needed to clarify the relationship between exposure levels and the development of conduction abnormalities in n-hexane neuropathy.
