Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Neurology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Carbamazepine is a widely prescribed anticonvulsant medication used for managing seizure disorders.
  • Adverse drug reactions can manifest in various organ systems, including the gastrointestinal tract.

Observation:

  • A 15-year-old male patient with an 8-year history of seizure disorder treated with carbamazepine presented with recurrent episodes of small bowel obstruction.
  • Surgical exploration revealed a full-thickness small bowel biopsy.
  • Histopathological examination of the biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of eosinophilic enteritis.

Findings:

  • The patient's clinical symptoms of small bowel obstruction resolved after a gradual reduction in carbamazepine dosage.
  • This suggests a strong association between carbamazepine use and the development of eosinophilic enteritis.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights a potential, previously unrecognized gastrointestinal adverse effect of long-term carbamazepine therapy.
  • Clinicians should consider eosinophilic enteritis in the differential diagnosis of small bowel obstruction in patients on carbamazepine.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanism of carbamazepine-induced eosinophilic enteritis and its prevalence.
