Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Maternal-Fetal Medicine
- Gastroenterology
Background:
- Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is uncommon during pregnancy, posing diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
- Advanced-stage CRC in pregnant patients requires careful consideration of maternal and fetal well-being.
Observation:
- A 23-year-old primigravida presented with advanced adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon at 34 weeks gestation.
- The patient underwent cesarean delivery, resulting in a healthy female infant.
Findings:
- Despite delivery, the patient received chemotherapy as the chosen treatment modality.
- The patient succumbed to the disease three months following childbirth.
Implications:
- This case highlights the critical need for early diagnosis and multidisciplinary management of colorectal cancer in pregnant individuals.
- Further research is warranted to optimize treatment strategies for advanced colorectal cancer diagnosed during gestation.
