Background:

  • Direct/indirect lingual branch of glossopharyngeal nerve damage occurred in 3 cases.
  • Medication use post-tonsillectomy was implicated in 2 cases.
  • Dietary zinc deficiency was identified as a cause in 3 cases, despite preoperative identification.

Implications:

  • Patients should be informed of the risk of taste disorder during tonsillectomy consent.
  • Preoperative assessment should include taste threshold measurement and serum zinc levels.
  • A comprehensive drug history, including non-prescription medications, is crucial for identifying potential causes.
