Summary

Ulnar artery thrombosis, often from hand trauma, can be effectively treated with surgical artery excision and vein grafting. This surgical approach provides symptomatic relief and resolves physical findings when conservative methods fail.

Background:

  • Ulnar artery thrombosis can lead to significant patient morbidity.
  • It is frequently caused by blunt or repetitive trauma to the hypothenar eminence of the hand.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the presentation and diagnosis of ulnar artery thrombosis.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of ulnar artery excision with interposition vein grafting for treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart analysis of nine patients treated between 1989 and 1995.
  • Surgical intervention involved ulnar artery excision with interposition vein grafting.
  • Some patients also received stellate ganglion blocks.

Main Results:

  • Eight of nine patients underwent artery excision and vein grafting.
