Transient post-traumatic hemidiaphragmatic paralysis in two cats.

Summary

Post-traumatic hemidiaphragmatic paralysis in cats can be diagnosed using imaging techniques like radiography, fluoroscopy, and ultrasonography. Both diagnosed cases in this study resolved spontaneously with full diaphragmatic recovery.

Background:

Post-traumatic hemidiaphragmatic paralysis is a rare condition in felines.
Trauma is a common preceding event leading to diaphragmatic injury.

Observation:

Two cats presented with a history of trauma and paradoxical inward abdominal wall movement during inspiration.
Clinical signs suggested diaphragmatic dysfunction.

Findings:

Thoracic radiographs were suggestive but not definitive for hemidiaphragmatic paralysis.
Fluoroscopy and ultrasonography confirmed the diagnosis in the respective cases.
Both feline patients experienced spontaneous resolution of the paralysis.

Implications:

This study highlights the utility of fluoroscopy and ultrasonography in diagnosing feline hemidiaphragmatic paralysis.
Spontaneous recovery is possible, indicating a favorable prognosis in some cases.
Further research into the long-term outcomes and specific injury mechanisms is warranted.
