For women over 45, self-perceived menopausal transition and higher FSH levels predict a shorter time to final menstrual period (FMP). These factors help estimate remaining time in menopause.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify predictors of time to FMP in women over 45.
  • To examine the relationship between hormonal, health, and demographic factors and FMP.
  • To establish a marker for initiating observation of FMP.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort study of 99 women aged 46-55.
  • Participants completed menstrual diaries and provided annual blood samples and interviews.
  • Observation period averaged 1.5 years, with 77 reaching FMP.

Main Results:

  • Women self-identifying as in transition had a higher probability of FMP.
  • Each year of age increased FMP hazard by 30%.
  • Each unit increase in log FSH increased FMP hazard by 50%.

Conclusions:

  • Self-rated menopausal status and serum FSH levels predict time to FMP in women >45.
  • Median time to FMP ranged from 11 months (high FSH, in transition) to 21 months (low FSH, not in transition).
  • These factors aid in estimating remaining time in the menopausal transition.
