[Foreign body of bladder in children]
Insights
This study reviews 30 years of experience treating bladder foreign bodies in children. All 19 pediatric patients recovered successfully after transvesical or transurethral removal, with no complications.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Urology
- Surgical Innovation
- Medical Case Series
Context:
- Foreign bodies in the bladder are a rare but significant clinical challenge in pediatric patients.
- Understanding the origins and management of these foreign bodies is crucial for effective treatment.
Purpose:
- To summarize a thirty-year experience in the diagnosis and treatment of bladder foreign bodies in children.
- To analyze the mechanisms of foreign body penetration, treatment modalities, and patient outcomes.
Summary:
- Nineteen pediatric patients (12 girls, 7 boys; ages 3-15) with bladder foreign bodies were treated.
- Foreign bodies entered the bladder via retrograde urethral passage, trauma/migration, or procedural errors.
- Transvesical removal was performed in 14 patients, and transurethral removal in 5, with all patients achieving full recovery without complications.
Impact:
- Provides valuable insights into the long-term management of pediatric bladder foreign bodies.
- Highlights the safety and efficacy of both transvesical and transurethral removal techniques.
- Contributes to the existing literature on pediatric urological foreign body management.
Abstract:
The thirty-years experience of diagnosis and treatment of the bladder foreign body in children was summarized. There were treated 19 children with the bladder foreign bodies in the clinic. There were 12 (63.12%) girls and 7 (36.88%) boys, aged from 3 to 15 years old. Three mechanisms of penetration of foreign bodies into the bladder were delineated: by retrograde way via urethra; while gun-shot wounding, trauma or due to migration from surrounding tissues and organs; as the consequence of faults, committed during performance of operations or therapeutic-diagnostic procedures. In 14 patients the foreign bodies were removed transvesically and in 5--transurethrally. All the patients had recovered. Complications did not occur. Late results were studied up.
