Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Laryngeal carcinoma is a significant health concern with multifactorial causes.
  • Understanding the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of laryngeal cancer is crucial for effective prevention and treatment strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the demographic, etiological, clinical, and histopathological features of laryngeal carcinoma in Dhaka City.
  • To identify key risk factors and common presentations of laryngeal cancer in the studied population.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 160 patients diagnosed with laryngeal carcinoma from four hospitals in Dhaka City.
  • Data collection included patient demographics, lifestyle habits (smoking, betel chewing), clinical symptoms, tumor site, growth patterns, lymph node involvement, and histopathological findings.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The majority of patients were male (96.88%) with a mean age of 54.67 years, predominantly from low socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Smoking (93.12%) and betel leaf chewing (71.87%) were identified as major risk factors.
  • Hoarseness of voice was the most common symptom (65.62%). Supraglottic carcinoma (69.38%) was more prevalent than glottic carcinoma (30.62%).
  • Exophytic growth (52.50%) and palpable lymph nodes (48.75%) were frequently observed. All cases were histologically confirmed as squamous cell carcinoma.

Conclusions:

  • Smoking and betel leaf chewing are strongly associated with laryngeal carcinoma in Dhaka.
  • Early detection and public health interventions targeting these risk factors are essential to reduce the burden of laryngeal cancer.
