[Current status in Spain. Immigration and health]

Migrations are one of the most relevant social phenomena in modern times. They appear as a clear consequence of the inequality that exists among rich and poor countries, becoming a survival strategy for many people who have an uncertain future in their places of origin. The arrival of people from countries having different cultures has made manifest the existence in Spain of a complex multicultural society which is not always easy to deal with and comprehend. In this first part of an article, whose second section will be published shortly, the author comments on non European Community immigration in Spain, the multicultural reality which this bears with it in our society, its specifics affects on the health field, and in what manner health professionals should become involved in their daily activities.
