Abstract:
The author discusses the effect of genetic disorders on public health, considering not only the affected persons but the importance of assisting their relatives. Sickle cell anemia and consanguineous marriage are specially considered in Northeastern Brazil due to its frequencies and possibilities of being explained to the public through genetic counselling.
