Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Biology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Genomics

Background:

  • Transcriptome analysis is crucial for understanding gene function in development, aging, and disease.
  • Accurate quantification of gene expression is essential for reliable biological interpretation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the functionally active genome of adult C57BL/6 mouse heart (AMH).
  • To establish a reliable transcriptome reference for cardiac gene expression studies.

Main Methods:

  • Serial Analysis of Gene Expression (SAGE) was employed to sequence 88,860 tags from AMH.
  • Quantitative PCR was used for independent validation of transcript abundance.

Main Results:

  • Over 66% of unique tags matched known genes or expressed sequence tags (ESTs).
