Summary

The presence of a cervical rib may indicate sacralization, and vice versa. This association is useful for diagnosing cervical or lumbar pain before advanced imaging.

Background:

  • Cervical ribs and sacralization are anatomical variations observed in clinical practice.
  • A defined length for the transverse process of the seventh cervical vertebra to identify a cervical rib is lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish reference values for the length of the transverse processes of the seventh cervical vertebra.
  • To investigate the association between the presence of cervical ribs and sacralization.

Main Methods:

  • Reference values for transverse process length were determined from 210 normal individuals' cervical radiographs.
  • Elongation exceeding 30 mm (2 standard deviations) was defined as a cervical rib.
  • A study group of 324 outpatients with detected cervical ribs or sacralization and 729 controls were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • A significant association was found between cervical ribs and sacralization (Odds Ratio 5.097, P < 0.001).
  • Conversely, sacralization was also significantly associated with cervical ribs (Odds Ratio 5.204, P < 0.001).
  • In patients with cervical ribs, 73.2% also had sacralization; in those with sacralization, 64.4% had cervical ribs.

Conclusions:

  • The presence of a cervical rib can be an indicator for sacralization, and sacralization can suggest a cervical rib.
  • This association aids in the differential diagnosis of cervical or lumbar pain, potentially reducing the need for advanced diagnostic methods.
