This case report details an unusual, small extraskeletal osteosarcoma in the buttock

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a rare malignant soft tissue tumor, comprising approximately 1% of such neoplasms.
  • This report focuses on an atypical presentation of this rare sarcoma.

Observation:

  • A 55-year-old female presented with a incidentally discovered small nodule in the superficial subcutaneous region of the buttock.
  • The excised tumor measured 8 mm x 10 mm, located in the subcutaneous tissue without invasion of underlying fascia.

Findings:

  • Microscopic examination revealed a tumor with bizarre spindle and giant cells, producing lace-like osteoid, consistent with extraskeletal osteosarcoma.
  • The patient received chemotherapy with Rosen T-20 post-surgery.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • The successful management of this small, superficial extraskeletal osteosarcoma highlights the importance of complete surgical excision and adjuvant chemotherapy.
  • The patient achieved a 4-year disease-free survival, suggesting favorable outcomes are possible with prompt and appropriate treatment for localized extraskeletal osteosarcoma.
