Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of interval training (IT) versus continuous training (CT) in improving physiological responses, exercise tolerance (ET), and quality of life in COPD patients.
  • To determine if IT can induce measurable training effects comparable to CT.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-six COPD patients (FEV1 45+/-4% predicted) were randomized into IT or CT groups.
  • Training involved cycling 40 min/day, 2 days/week for 12 weeks.

  • CT group exercised at 50% peak work-rate; IT group performed 30s intervals at 100% peak work-rate with 30s rest.
