Area of Science:

  • Oral pathology
  • Oncology
  • Medical terminology standardization

Background:

  • Leukoplakia is the most common precancerous lesion of the oral mucosa.
  • Current reporting methods for leukoplakia lack uniformity, hindering accurate assessment of management outcomes and malignant transformation rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To recommend standardized definitions and terminologies for reporting oral leukoplakia.
  • To establish a uniform classification and staging system for oral leukoplakia.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature and clinical practices regarding oral leukoplakia reporting.
  • Development of consensus-based recommendations for terminology and classification.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Recommendations for a certainty factor in diagnosing oral leukoplakia.
  • Advocacy for a unified classification system incorporating size and histopathologic findings.
  • Conclusion that distinguishing between "tobacco-associated" and "idiopathic" leukoplakias is not necessary for reporting.
  • Conclusions:

    • Standardized reporting of oral leukoplakia is crucial for consistent evaluation of management outcomes and malignant transformation.
    • A uniform classification system based on size and histopathology, without considering subsite or tobacco association, is proposed.
