    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Bone Metabolism
    • Surgical Case Reports

    Background:

    • Primary hyperparathyroidism is a common endocrine disorder characterized by excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH).
    • Hypercalcemia, a hallmark of primary hyperparathyroidism, can lead to various clinical manifestations, including bone disease.
    • Osteoporosis, a condition of reduced bone density, is a known complication, though its presentation can vary.

    Observation:

    • This case report details a patient presenting with symptoms attributed to hypercalcemia secondary to primary hyperparathyroidism.
    • Bone densitometry revealed osteoporosis localized exclusively to the thoracic spine.
    • Clinical suspicion for primary hyperparathyroidism was confirmed through biochemical testing.

    Findings:

    • Parathormone level testing was crucial in establishing the definitive diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The patient exhibited thoracic spine-specific osteoporosis, a less common presentation of the disease.
  • Surgical intervention was pursued as the treatment modality.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the diverse clinical presentations of primary hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia.
    • It underscores the importance of parathormone level assessment for accurate diagnosis.
    • The successful surgical management indicates its efficacy in treating primary hyperparathyroidism and associated skeletal complications.
