Semantic transparency aids morphological processing at longer prime presentation times, but not at shorter ones. This suggests processing time limits semantic contributions in word recognition.

  • To examine how different stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) affect semantic processing during morphological priming.

  • Participants responded to target words presented in Roman script.
  • Prime words, related morphologically and/or semantically, were presented in either Roman or Cyrillic script at two SOAs (48 msec and 250 msec).
  • Main Results:

    • At a long SOA (250 msec), inflectionally related primes yielded the most facilitation, followed by semantically transparent derived primes, and then semantically opaque derived primes.
    • At a short SOA (48 msec), no difference in facilitation was observed between semantically transparent and opaque derived primes; both were slower than inflectionally related primes.
    • Alphabet-alternating conditions (prime in Cyrillic, target in Roman) showed overall greater facilitation but maintained the same pattern.

    Conclusions:

    • The contribution of semantics to morphological processing is dependent on available processing time.
    • Restricted processing duration limits the influence of semantic transparency on morphological facilitation.
    • Findings challenge theories proposing a task-invariant semantic criterion for lexical decomposition.
