Summary

Serum lysozyme levels were higher in patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis compared to healthy individuals. However, overlapping values mean this measurement cannot reliably distinguish between these conditions.

Mean serum lysozyme concentrations were significantly elevated in both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis patient groups compared to healthy controls.

Serum lysozyme levels were marginally higher in Crohn's disease patients than in ulcerative colitis patients.

A considerable overlap in serum lysozyme values was observed between IBD patients and normal individuals.

Conclusions:

While serum lysozyme is elevated in IBD, the overlap with normal ranges limits its utility as a standalone diagnostic biomarker.
Further research may explore combinations of markers or different lysozyme assays for improved diagnostic accuracy in IBD.
