Summary

Smoking impairs natural killer (NK) cell activity and unbalances cytokine production in blood immune cells. These systemic immune changes in smokers may increase infection risk, particularly post-surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

    • These immune alterations may predispose smokers to respiratory and systemic infections, especially postoperatively.
    • Findings highlight the need for anesthesiologists to consider these immune changes during perioperative management.
