Summary

Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) injectable contraception use is linked to bone density loss. However, bone density significantly recovers after discontinuing DMPA, suggesting reversible effects.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of DMPA use on bone density.
  • To assess bone density changes after DMPA discontinuation.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based prospective cohort study involving 457 women aged 18-39 (183 DMPA users, 274 non-users).
  • Bone density was measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry every 6 months for 3 years.

  • DMPA users experienced significant bone density loss at the spine and total hip compared to non-users.
