Summary

Acetabular protrusion (AP) affects one-third of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) patients, particularly those with type 3 and 5. While often asymptomatic, AP can rarely cause severe medical issues like constipation and hip ankylosis in OI patients.

Background:

  • Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a group of genetic disorders characterized by bone fragility.
  • Pelvic deformities, including acetabular protrusion (AP), can occur in patients with OI.
  • The clinical significance and incidence of AP in OI require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of acetabular protrusion (AP) in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI).
  • To evaluate the clinical consequences and associated medical problems of AP in OI.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical charts and pelvic radiographs of 79 patients with OI.
  • Patients were classified into OI types 1, 3, 4 (Sillence), and type 5 (Glorieux).
  • Acetabular protrusion (AP) was measured using the center-edge angle and acetabular ilioischial line.

  • Radiologic evidence of acetabular protrusion (AP) was found in 26 out of 79 patients (33%).
