Background:

The visual system decomposes scenes into features processed by parallel subsystems.
Theories suggest these subsystems operate independently before attention integrates their output.

Purpose of the Study:

To introduce a new paradigm, the gestalt detection task, for assessing preattentive dependence between visual subsystems.
To investigate whether form and color processing subsystems interact during preattentive visual processing.

Main Methods:

Developed and utilized the gestalt detection task.
Conducted five experiments using brief stimuli to probe preattentive processing.
Tested the independence of form and color subsystems.

Observed synergistic effects when feature information was consistent.
Observed antagonistic effects when feature information was inconsistent.
