Summary

This case study shows that dental occlusal plane issues can cause temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome symptoms. Restoring the occlusal plane resolved all dental and non-dental TMJ disorder symptoms.

Background:

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders present with diverse dental and non-dental symptoms.
  • Occlusal plane disturbances are implicated as a potential contributing factor in TMJ syndrome.

Observation:

  • A patient with classical TMJ syndrome and typical symptoms underwent electromyography (EMG) testing.
  • EMG tests were conducted before occlusal plane restoration, immediately after, and three months post-prosthesis application.

Findings:

  • EMG results indicated a direct correlation between the patient's occlusal plane and their complex TMJ symptoms.
  • Restoration of the occlusal plane led to the complete resolution of all reported dental and non-dental TMJ disorder symptoms.

  • Occlusal rehabilitation may be an effective treatment strategy for patients with TMJ syndrome.
