Background:

  • Esophageal intramural pseudodiverticulosis (EIPD) is a rare condition.
  • It is characterized by the presence of multiple flask-shaped outpouchings within the esophageal wall.

Observation:

  • A 65-year-old woman presented with intermittent dysphagia.
  • An upper gastrointestinal series revealed EIPD coincident with a narrowed, inflamed esophageal segment (approx. 15 cm).

Findings:

  • Endoscopy showed mild stricture and chronic esophagitis with bacterial and Candida superinfection.
  • Biopsies confirmed active chronic esophagitis but no neoplasm.

Implications:

  • The findings suggest that local immune reactions and abnormal esophageal motor activity in narrowed segments may contribute to EIPD etiology.
