Summary

This case study highlights a rare instance of multiple bilateral renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs) in a young woman without tuberous sclerosis. Surgical intervention preserved renal function, demonstrating successful management of these uncommon kidney tumors.

Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Oncology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are typically benign, unilateral tumors.
  • AMLs can occur sporadically or be associated with tuberous sclerosis.
  • Multiple bilateral AMLs are exceptionally rare.

Observation:

  • A 17-year-old female presented with multiple bilateral renal lesions.
  • Sonography revealed hyperdense lesions; CT confirmed fatty tissue consistent with AMLs.
  • Eight AMLs were surgically resected from the right kidney, preserving maximal functional tissue.

Findings:

  • The largest resected AML measured 7 x 4 x 2.4 cm.
  • Post-operative renal function remained completely preserved.
  • This case represents a rare occurrence of multiple bilateral AMLs in the absence of tuberous sclerosis.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Surgical management of multiple renal AMLs can preserve renal function.
  • This case expands the understanding of AML presentation and management.
  • Highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses in renal tumor cases.
