    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Internal Medicine

    Background:

    • Mallory-Weiss syndrome is a recognized cause of upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
    • Precipitating factors include retching and vomiting, often linked to alcohol consumption, medication side effects, or overeating after gastric surgery.

    Observation:

    • A series of six patients with upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage due to Mallory-Weiss syndrome were studied.
    • Retching was the most common precipitating factor (5/6).
    • Co-existing silent pathological lesions were frequently noted during endoscopic examination.

    Findings:

    • Diagnosis was confirmed by patient history and early panendoscopy.
    • Hemorrhage severity varied from mild to moderate (300-500 cc) in three patients and moderate to severe (1,000-2,000 cc) in the other three.
    • All patients recovered with medical management; no surgical intervention was required.

    Implications:

    • The study suggests that Mallory-Weiss syndrome, a cause of upper GI bleeding, often has a benign prognosis.
    • Early diagnosis through history and endoscopy is crucial.
    • The high incidence of co-existing lesions warrants further investigation.
