Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Psychopharmacology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Psychotropic medication use is common in the elderly, a population susceptible to adverse drug reactions.
  • Understanding trends in psychotropic prescribing is vital for improving geriatric care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the prevalence and changes in psychotropic drug use among home-dwelling elderly individuals throughout the 1990s.
  • To compare psychotropic use in a Finnish municipality with national data.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive analysis of two cross-sectional surveys (1990-91 and 1998-99) of individuals aged 64 and over in Lieto, Finland.
  • Utilized national prescription data and interview-based drug information categorized by the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) system.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Approximately 25% of elderly individuals used at least one psychotropic drug in both survey periods.
  • The use of hypnotics and antidepressants significantly increased, as did polypharmacy (two or more psychotropics).
  • Prevalence was highest in those aged 85 and over, predominantly women.

Conclusions:

  • Psychotropic prescribing and use in the elderly appear to be excessive and not improving.
  • Newer generation psychotropics were not utilized, indicating potential gaps in treatment.
  • Regular reassessment of the necessity for long-term psychotropic medication is recommended.
