Summary

Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is a safe and effective surgical option for adrenal tumors. This minimally invasive technique offers a shorter hospital stay and low complication rates for select patients.

Background:

Adrenalectomy is a surgical procedure to remove one or both adrenal glands.
Laparoscopic adrenalectomy offers potential benefits over traditional open surgery, including reduced pain and faster recovery.
Indications for adrenalectomy include functioning tumors, incidentalomas, and adrenal cancer.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the indications, surgical techniques, and outcomes of laparoscopic adrenalectomy.
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of this minimally invasive approach.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of 8 cases of transperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy.
Cases included pheochromocytomas, aldosteromas, myelolipoma, and non-functioning adenomas.

Main Results:

Mean operative time was approximately 3 hours with an average blood loss of 200 cc.
Mean hospital stay was 2.5 days, with a 10% complication rate.
Conversion to open surgery occurred in 5-10% of cases.

Conclusions:

Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is the preferred surgical method for functioning adrenal tumors.
It is also recommended for incidentally discovered tumors less than or equal to 6 cm that show growth on imaging.
